Star Wars Fic Reference Wiki

This page has tables of domesticated creatures based on use, with further information on each creature further down on the page. The profiles of each creature aren't exhaustive, but hopefully contain the information important for using them in fic. Creatures that belong to multiple categories appear in multiple tables. The use of "(native?)" indicates it is a matter of in-universe scientific dispute. Contradictions between sources are noted in references, and the preference for one over another is often arbitrary. When sources disagree about size, this page generally goes with the larger unless they're radically different between continuities, in which case both are listed.

There is a difference between tamed animals and domesticated animals.[1] Star Wars doesn't know or care about this distinction. We do sometimes get the level of evolutionary detail to confirm that creatures are domesticated in the traditional sense, but they also often use "domesticated" when they mean "tamed" (often to distinguish between feral and non-feral domesticated creatures!). Let's just pretend it's a translation issue from Basic to English. All the creatures on this page are assumed to be domesticated (even if we don't strictly have enough information to confirm permanent genetic modification) unless noted otherwise.

For a comparative size chart of creatures from The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide, see Comparative Creatures Sizes.

An explanation of the creature categories:

  • Mounts and pack animals: Mounts are creatures you ride on, and pack animals are creatures you use to carry stuff around. Pack animals are usually also mounts (and vice versa) but not always.
  • Production animals: Creatures wanted for their hair, hide, meat, milk, dung or spit. Yes, spit.
  • Guard animals: Creatures used to guard against intruders, often violently.
  • Other working animals: Creatures that have jobs that aren't in the previous categories. This includes creatures who hunt things for you.
  • Household pets: Beloved little guys who live in your home.

If you're looking to make up a mount, good news: in Legends canon, horses are found on heaps of planets. How? nobody knows![WFG 2] But it gives you an easy and technically canon-compliant out if you want it.

Profiles[]

The main images are in the tables above; the images in this section are secondary, often showing proportions or other important aspects. "Notable examples" isn't meant to be an exhaustive list of appearances or a restriction on when they're used (unless noted); it's more for listing if they're used in some kind of conflict.

Aiwha[]

Aiwha tcw 3x02

Obi-Wan Kenobi riding an aiwha bareback

  • Type: Mount (flying),[NEGTAS 13][Note 25] pack animal (larger Imperial-era breeds)[40]
  • Class: Mammal (cetacean)[WFG 4]
  • Planet:
  • Some other oceanic worlds[12]
  • Habitat: Water[WFG 4]
  • Diet: Small fish and krill. The New Essential Guide to Alien Species claims they have a baleen plate but that they also have sharp teeth, which makes no sense. You can't have both! Also eats seaweed, kelp, other ocean plants, and vitamin-rich grasses in wetlands.[NEGTAS 13]
  • Predators: Unknown
  • Size: 2-3m high, 8-10m long, 11m wingspan,[NEGTAS 13][Note 16] 1,200kg[SWB 8]
  • Appearance: Their dark blue skin is smooth, flexible and waterproof, and it's white on the underside of the aiwha. They have enormous wings covered in the same smooth, flexible skin as the rest of their body. In New Canon, they have a short-ish tail that has two small flaps on each side like the wings,[SWweb 4] but in Legends they have a much longer tail without the flaps.[WFG 4] They have very small hind legs (you can see them in the picture in the "flying mounts" table) and several blowholes in their head.[NEGTAS 13]
  • Behaviour and uses:
    • See here for a gifset of an aiwha in motion
    • They can both fly and swim[NEGTAS 13][Note 27]
    • They build up momentum with the cresting waves in order to launch into the air[NEGTAS 13]
    • There's a whole system of using water as ballast that they use in flight. Honestly, if you want to get into how aiwhas work, best just read The New Essential Guide to Alien Species.[NEGTAS 13]
    • They make high pitched whistling sounds to navigate and herd prey[NEGTAS 13]
    • They also communicate with clicks, whistles and low musical calls. When excited, they make a bleating noise that sounds "much like a droid that's losing power".[SWB 8]
    • Because of their tiny back legs, they're terrible at locomotion on land.[NEGTAS 13] Purely speculation: they might move kind of like an elephant seal on land (very slowly, blobbing along). Their wings are so long that it's going to be incredibly ungainly.
    • Usually ridden with a saddle and bridle,[SWweb 4][WFG 4] but it's possible to ride without one in a pinch.[41]
    • Domesticated as mounts by both Gungans and Kaminoans[NEGTAS 13]
      • Kaminoans use them both as transport between their stilt cities, as well as on religious pilgrimages to ancient ruins of cities underwater.[NEGTAS 13]
      • Gungans use aiwhas as aerial bombers and reconnaissance in the military. They specially train aiwhas not to use their screeching and instead rely on hand signals from their riders, though they can also command them to screech as a weapon. Military aiwhas will recognise when their rider is injured and need to retreat, and will do so under their own power if the rider is unable to signal them.[NEGTAS 13]
    • Legends · The Kaminoans have genetically modified the aiwhas on Kamino to be immune to electricity so they aren't affected by the frequent lightning storms. The Naboo aiwhas do not have this immunity.[NEGTAS 13]
    • New Canon · When Kamino's icecaps melted, causing a planetwide flood, the Kaminoans used their cloning technology to modify aiwhas so they could survive in the new climate[SWB 8]
    • During the Empire, some Imperial base commanders used them for reconnaissance, flying 5,000m above the ground. Commanders could buy them for AurebeshSans-Serif credit45000 per head. Larger breeds used for cargo hauling had also been developed by the Imperial era.[40]
    • Notable examples: Used by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Battle of Kamino in the Clone Wars.[SWweb 4]

Anooba[]

Anooba (field guide tatooine)

An anooba in a Tusken camp looking surprisingly friendly

  • Type: Guard animal[WFG 3]
  • Class: Mammal[11]
  • Planet:
  • Habitat: Desert[WFG 3]
  • Diet: Any creature pretty much from a small scurrier to a ronto. For prey bigger than they are, they'll work in packs[42] They will also scavenger other creatures' kills.[WFG 3]
  • Predators: Unknown
  • Size: 2.7m long,[28] 20-45kg[WFG 3]
  • Appearance: Quadrupedal, digitigrade creature (like cats or dogs) with sparse fur covering its whole body, with a mane all the way along its back. The mane of adults is usually dark, but the mane of juveniles is white. They have dark stripes, and their fur is usually somewhere between tan[WFG 3] and grey,[AA 4] though white anoobas also exist.[43] They have large pointy ears and a long tail for counterbalance while running. Their most distinctive feature is a tusk protuding up from their chin, which they use to stab their prey[AA 4] and is capable of crushing bones.[WFG 3][Note 28] (Realistically, their chin tusk doesn't make sense because it can't eat with that in the way, but it looks cool.)
  • Behaviour and uses:
    • Fastest land creature in the deserts of Tatooine for short distances[42]
    • Travel in packs of 10-12[SWB 2]
    • Tuskens keep them as guard animals[WFG 3]
    • Trainable, not only to attack at the owner's command but also to retrieve items such as hats[SWweb 9]
  • Notable examples: A bounty hunter's pet anooba killed the Jedi Even Piell during the Clone Wars.[43]

Aryx[]

Aryx fighting

An aryx fighting multiple humanoid attackers and winning

  • Type: Mount[2]
  • Class: Avian[2]
  • Planet: Cerea[2]
  • Habitat: Plains[2]
  • Diet: Carnivore[3]
  • Predators: Unknown
  • Size: ~1.9m at shoulder[Note 1]
  • Appearance: A flightless bird with a very long neck and very long yellow legs, which end in yellow talons. The feathers are white, except for the relatively short tail and the head crest, which can be blue (but is sometimes just white). It looks kind of like an ostrich, but the wings are less prominent.[44]
  • Behaviour and uses:
    • Flightless and ridden with a saddle and bridle.[2]
    • It has excellent stamina and can cover long distances very quickly, which makes it ideal for travel on Cerea.[45]
    • While it is usually placid, it can be aggressive when threatened[45] and uses its talons to attack. It's strong enough in a fight to defeat multiple humanoid opponents.[3]

Bantha[]

Bantha size ages

A chart showing bantha growth, showcasing a bantha's size at 1 year, 6 years, 23 years and 30 years.

  • Type: Mount, pack animal, production animal[NEGTAS 2]
  • Class: Mammal[NEGTAS 2]
  • Planet:
  • Habitat:
  • Diet: Herbivore. On Tatooine, they eat lichen mats.[NEGTAS 2][Note 2]
  • Predators: Krayt dragons, anoobas who prey on bantha calves[WFG 3], womp rats (who work in large groups to overwhelm banthas despite being smaller)[NEGTAS 18]
  • Size: 4000kg at maturity (50kg at birth),[WFG 3] 2.5m tall, 3m wide[NEGTAS 2]
  • Appearance: Their body looks kind of like a woolly mammoth, except without the elephantine features of the head (no trunk, no tusks). Long wool, brown, very large and solid. Long, curly horns and long tail, also covered in long wool that drags along the ground.[NEGTAS 2] Really long and dextrous tongue used to carry, eat, drink, communicate with other banthas and also has olfactory glands.[WFG 3] Their feet have foot pads and four toes.[SWB 2]
  • Behaviour and uses:
    • Lifespan 80-100 years[WFG 3]
    • Gestation 30 months[WFG 3]
    • Sexual maturity at 20 years[WFG 3]
    • Herds of up to 25 members; matriarchal[SWB 2]
    • Can carry 500kg of cargo or 5 human-sized passengers, including the driver[NEGTAS 2]
    • Many first-time bantha riders get motion sickness from their rocking gait[NEGTAS 2]
    • Generally like to go at a sedate pace but can run if necessary[NEGTAS 2]
    • Extremely adaptable, and able to survive weeks without food or water[NEGTAS 2]
    • There are bantha graveyards — like elephant graveyards. It's considered very bad luck to enter a bantha graveyard.[WFG 3]
    • Bantha horns grow one knob each year, with thicker segments indicating a time of plenty and cracked, thin segments indicate a period of famine or drought.[SWB 2]
    • Livestock uses:
      • Thick fur and skin used for clothing[NEGTAS 2]
      • Bantha-skin goods such as shoes or luggage is an expensive luxury on some worlds[NEGTAS 2]
      • Bantha meat is edible and is cooked into steaks, burgers or dried to make jerky[SWB 2]
      • Banthas produce blue milk which can be drunk plain or made into products such as ice cream, butter or yoghurt.[SWB 2] In the Legends continuity, bantha butter is green.[46][Note 29]
      • Bantha horn and bones used by several cultures to carve decorations and toys,[NEGTAS 2] and Tuskens use the bones of dead banthasa to maake tools and tent supports[SWB 2]
      • Bantha dung can be burnt as fuel[SWB 2]
    • Mostly domesticated, but on some planets wild herds do exist[NEGTAS 2]
    • Common bantha is the domesticated species, but other species of bantha include the dwarf bantha (shy, lives in canyons and cliffs) and dune bantha (lives in equatorial regions, rangier, much less fur)[WFG 3]
    • At age seven, a Tusken is presented with their own baby bantha, who they then bond with for life. When a Tusken or their bantha dies, depression or suicide of the one left behind is common.[WFG 3]

Blarth[]

Blarth pups

Blarth face

A close-up of a blarth face, showing the teeth and tusks

  • Type: Pet, guard animal, production animal[WFG 4]
  • Class: Amphibian[28]
  • Planet: Tatooine (native)[WFG 4]

  • Predators: Unknown
  • Size: Medium[WFG 4]
  • Appearance: Blarths are grey and blubbery, with seal-like skin. They have tiny legs and very long tongues. Their mouth opens like a frog's. They have sharp teeth and small eyes. Adults have two curved tusks, and two small curving horns that begin at their nose, travel back across their head, and then lift off from the top of their scalp.
  • Behaviour and uses:
    • Kept as pets and watch animals by Gungans[WFG 4]
    • Naturally friendly, intelligent and playful[47]
    • Pet ones enjoy attention, particularly lolling about in doorways and busy rooms to trip up the unsuspecting[WFG 4]
    • Good with children[WFG 4]
    • Surprisingly agile and swift despite looking like a lump[WFG 4][Note 30]
    • Rich blubber allows them to stay underwater for two hours[WFG 4]
    • In the wild, uses their tail as a fishing rod, the dextrous fingers at the end grabbing a lure like a bunch of feathers or a worm and holding it underwater until they get a bite, at which point they whip their tail up and put the fish in their mouth[47]
    • They drool a lot and their drool has several uses for Gungans: skin lubricant, perfume base, cleaning agents, strengthening bubble walls[WFG 4]

A Mando riding a blurrg.

A blurrg is often used as a battle-steed.

  • Type: Mount, Pack animal, other working animal[AA 2]
  • Class: Reptile[AA 2]
  • Planet:

  • Appearance: Blurrgs are bipedal, and have wide, muscular tails used for balance and defence, thick back legs, and two very small and thin arms. They have three toes with rounded nails on each foot and two claws on each hand. They have no necks. They can be green, grey, or black-and-brown, and some have bright orange or white markings. Their eyes are amber with a black iris and no visible sclera. They have very large, wide mouths with a multitude of sharp teeth.[SWB 2]
  • Behaviour and uses:
    • Brain size of a jubba nut[WFG 2]

    • Generally a steady temperament[6] but can be vicious when provoked.[AA 2]
    • Uses
      • Ranching[7]
      • Used by farmers to clear grass and weeds and haul equipment[AA 2]
      • Carrying heavy loads[6]

  • Planet: Lothal (native)[11]
  • Habitat: Grassland[AA 2]
  • Diet: Carnivore. Prey: loth-rats, assorted rodents, birds. They don't hunt prey larger than themselves.[35]
  • Predators: Unknown
  • Size: 94cm long,[34] up to 15kg[35][Note 23]
  • Appearance:
    • Start from the basic appearance of a cat. It's different from a regular cat, but that's a good base to work off.
  • Large triangular ears (like a regular cat but taller)[AA 2]
    • Mix of spotted and striped coats (for camouflage in their native grasslands).[34] Their base coat can range from cream-coloured[SWweb 10] to orangey-brown[11]
    • Short coats, white bellies[35]
    • Long black scaly (not furry!) legs that end in long sharp claws.[35] Do they have three toes[54] or four toes?[AA 2] Sources are undecided.
    • Needle-sharp teeth.[35] They have 14 teeth on their bottom jaw.[34]
  • Very short nose (almost doesn't stick out from their face at all), very wide mouth.[34]
  • Behaviour and uses:
    • What's their relation to tookas?
      • Galactic Pals says "tookas, or loth-cats as they're called around here", claiming they're exactly the same, but that's the only source that says that[54]
      • The Visual Encyclopedia says they're a "wild relative"[11]
      • Nexus of Power describes them as "members of the far-flung tooka family"[35]
      • Alien Archive says tookas share "many similarities with Loth-cats"[AA 2]
      • Ultimate Star Wars says they "may be wild ancestors of tookas"[34]
      • Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1 says they're a "subspecies" of tooka.[SWB 3]
    • Are they domesticated?
      • Unclear. AA says "temperamental in the wild but loyal once domesticated"[AA 2]
      • Nexus of Power calls them "wild",[35] as does The Visual Encyclopedia.[11]
      • Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1 says they're "rarely capable of domestication" and "even in captivity, these felines are prone to destructive episodes".[SWB 3]
    • In the wild, they might live in family groups,[34] or they may be solitary. It would be great if different reference books agreed about this, but they don't. Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1[SWB 3] and Nexus of Power claim that they're solitary and also raise young (called kits) together, which doesn't make any sense unless they're raising young for a very short amount of time for each litter.[35] Is this contradiction related to the fact that most IRL felines live solitary lives but feral housecats live in colonies? Who knows![55]
    • They hunt by sight and hearing
    • They're endurance hunters, stalking prey for hours or days until they find the ideal time to attack[35]
    • Used as pest control on spaceships;[AA 2] they can also be trained to hunt and retrieve.[35]
    • They love long grass because it reminds them of Lothal, their home planet.<ref name="Galactic Pals Loth-cat">
    • They are curious and friendly,[34] but can be destructive as pets.[35]
    • When cornered by larger creatures, loth-cats will go for the face first[35]
    • Stormtroopers find them annoying and use them for target practice[34]
  • Notable examples: Sabine Wren keeps one called Murley as a pet during the New Republic. In the manner of some cats, he is not technically hers, but sleeps in her rooms and eats the cat food she has for him. That's close enough to a pet for our purposes.[SWweb 10]

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Legends · "Ki-Adi-Mundi" on the Databank establishes that Ki-Adi-Mundi is 1.9m tall.[SWweb 1] Star Wars (1998) issue #1 has a panel that shows Ki-Adi-Mundi's aryx is approximately his height at the shoulder.[2]
  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I describes them as omnivores, taking into account their willingness to eat meat if given it by their handlers. There's no indication they'll generally seek out meat, though.[SWB 2] In real life, herbivores sometimes scavenge meat when flora is scarce.[4]
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I says they're up to 2m tall[SWB 2]
  4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 Galaxy of Creatures says they're herbivores except for their sexual cannibalism,[7] but this page has gone with Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I. Unlike with the similar entry for banthas,[Note 2] the Bestiary implies that this isn't due to being offered meat by their handlers, but instead hunting them: "Large mouths and sharp teeth enable them to consume a varied diet, consisting of grass, weeds, small creatures, and even members of their own species." In addition, blurrgs have sharp teeth[SWB 2] and banthas have flat grinding teeth apart from their incisors,[WFG 3] implying different diets.
  5. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, in its entry for "reptavian", defines them as "Any living being that had the characteristics germane to both reptiles and avians. This included endothermic metabolisms and oviparous reproduction." The New Essential Guide to Alien Species in its introduction defines it only as "a flying reptile", no mention of them being endotherms, which is a pretty important defining characteristic if it is one! Rest assured that every smashed-together creature category like this is utterly bullshit and you just have to not think about it.
  6. Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I says they're 1.75m tall,[SWB 2] but Obi-Wan (2022) #1 shows Obi-Wan's eopie, Akkani, is taller than he is.[9] Since Obi-Wan's height is mysterious (see Obi-Wan Kenobi for the many contradicting sources on this) but the shortest option is 1.75m,[10] Akkani has to be taller than 1.75m.
  7. Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I says they're herbivores.[SWB 3]
  8. Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I says they're 4.3m tall.[SWB 3]
  9. The New Essential Guide to Alien Species defines "reptomammal" as "a reptile that gives live birth", which is absurd because... that's just... reptiles. A lot of reptiles give live birth. It then goes on to say this absolutely insane sentence about rancors: "These creatures are reptomammals (part reptile, part mammal), and as such, they lay clutches of two eggs at a time." You just said in the introduction that the defining characteristic of reptomammals is that they give live birth. That is the only characteristic the book gives in its glossary of terms for reptomammal. And they immediately whiff it. What's a reptomammal? I guess anything your heart tells you is one. Nothing else I've found gives a definition! (If you do find one, please let me know.) ZeenMrala (she/her)
  10. Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I says they're herbivores.[SWB 3]
  11. New Canon · The Visual Encyclopedia and Galaxy of Creatures say tauntauns are reptiles,[19][20] but being a reptomammal that can regulate its own body temperature (as it is in Legends) makes infinitely more sense. Yes, being endothermic isn't listed as a defining characteristic of reptomammals but tauntauns are endotherms according to their New Essential Guide to Alien Species entry[NEGTAS 11] (and also Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back where it's literally a plot point!) so let's go with it. It looks like New Canon is trying to get rid of "reptomammal" as a thing, because the only uses are in De Agostini magazines which are notorious for having Legends stuff that hasn't appeared elsewhere in New Canon, because De Agostini cares not for such silly things as 'continuity'. It looks like that was premature, and 2024's Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I brings reptomammals back into Canon by designating tauntauns reptomammals.[SWB 6]
  12. The New Essential Guide to Alien Species says tauntauns are 1.8m tall instead.[NEGTAS 11]
  13. Star Wars Databank says tauntauns are 2m at the shoulder.[SWweb 3] This doesn't necessarily contradict the Galaxy of Creatures height (which Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I agrees with), because those sources never mention where it's measured to, whereas the Databank specifies the shoulder.
  14. Galaxy of Creatures,[20] Star Wars Wildlife: A Field Guide[WFG 6] and The New Essential Guide to Alien Species all say tauntauns are herbivores.[NEGTAS 11] Being an omnivore in a permanently-frozen landscape makes sense, though. Tauntauns have peg-like teeth, but that doesn't exclude them from herbivery — a classic example of herbivores with peg-like teeth is the various sauropods.[21] Choosing omnivore over herbivore is, as with most source decisions on this page, ultimately arbitrary. You may be able to tell that the author of this note (ZeenMrala) has written 13 new contradiction notes while reading through the first half of the Star Wars Bestiary and has become extremely self-conscious about it.
  15. The New Essential Guide to Alien Species says they're 3.9m tall and 15.24m long.[NEGTAS 12]
  16. 16.0 16.1 The first sentence of the Aiwha entry in The New Essential Guide to Alien Species is "The aiwha is an eight- to ten-meter-long aquatic mammal that flies on massive wings spanning twenty to thirty meters", but its infobox three paragraphs later gives a wingspan of eleven meters. The accompanying illustration suggests that the 11m number is correct,[NEGTAS 13] but other images of aiwhas, including their depiction in The Bad Batch,[SWweb 5] vary significantly in the length of the wingspan. Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds[23] also uses the 20-30m number. The answer to all of this of course is that Star Wars is wildly inconsistent.
  17. 17.0 17.1 Monsters of The Clone Wars says brezaks are reptiles.[SWweb 6]
  18. The New Essential Guide to Alien Species says they're 1.3m tall[NEGTAS 14]
  19. Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I actually says they're 75 metres tall,[SWB 5] but this wiki assumes that's a typo, especially because they're definitely not 75m tall in The High Republic Adventures (2021) #11.[30]
  20. The New Essential Guide to Alien Species says they're 1.5m tall.[NEGTAS 15]
  21. The High Republic Adventures (2022) #1 has a picture of Raf Thatchburn and the Corellian hound Tanteek next to each other. The High Republic Character Encyclopedia says Raf Thatchburn is 173cm tall.[31] Measuring the picture shows that Tanteek is 0.53 times the height of Raf, which would make her 91cm at the shoulder when sitting down.
  22. 22.0 22.1 The New Essential Guide to Alien Species says they're 76cm at the shoulder.[NEGTAS 16] It's unclear how Star Wars Bestiary is measuring it.
  23. 23.0 23.1 23.2 Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. I says they're "just under one meter in length and [weigh] up to ten kilograms".[SWB 3]
  24. I'm unhappy about it. ZeenMrala (she/her)
  25. Star Wars Age of Rebellion: Stay on Target claims aiwhas are not actually domesticated,[12] but I (ZeenMrala) don't think that makes sense, especially with the Gungan uses described in The New Essential Guide to Alien Species. It also claims that they can only fly brief distances, which contradicts everything else and is possibly just an RPG thing.
  26. The "relatively recently" phrasing for aiwha importation comes directly from The New Essential Guide to Alien Species,[NEGTAS 13] and gives no indication of what it's relative to. It could be decades before Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, it could be hundreds of years. Who knows!
  27. The Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide (section: Mounted Creatures) claims they can only swim in shallow water,[40] which doesn't really make sense since Kamino uses them to go to underwater cities. The book also says they can be used on any world with a breathable atmosphere, which also doesn't really make sense because of their aquatic diet.
  28. Alien Archive and Star Wars Bestiary Vol. I call it a tusk,[AA 4][SWB 2] Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know claims that it's a saber tooth,[28] and Star Wars Wildlife calls it a horny beak.[WFG 3] All of these are slightly different in terms of what they're made of in the real world (dentine; dentine and enamel; or keratin, respectively), but I personally think a tusk makes the most sense. ZeenMrala (she/her)
  29. This could be extrapolating from how in the real world, white milk makes yellow butter, so blue milk becomes yellower, creating green. At that point in the continuity, however, it's not yet explicitly established that bantha milk is blue, so this is just speculation.
  30. A feature in The Official Star Wars Fact File says blarths are lethargic,[47] contradicting Wildlife,[WFG 4] but if they're guard animals surely agility makes more sense.
  31. Texts that mention Ewoks using them include Galaxy of Creatures who say the Ewoks ranch them[7] and Build the Millennium Falcon, which says Ewoks use them as pack animals[6]

And domestic animals need not be "tame" in the behavioral sense (consider a Spanish fighting bull) and, conversely, wild animals can be quite tame (consider a handraised cheetah or tiger)." (web archive)
