A diagram of the Jedi Service Corps branches.

The branches of the Jedi Service Corps.

The Jedi Service Corps (JSC) is a sub-group of the Jedi Order in Legends and it has four branches:[1]

  • The Agricultural Corps[1]
  • The Medical Corps[1]
  • The Educational Corps[1]
  • The Exploration Corps[1]

Joining the Jedi Service Corps[]

You have all pledged to serve the Republic, and the members of the Jedi Service Corps are no less Jedi than those who roam the stars to defend the weak. If you are not taken on as an apprenticed Padawan, a position in the Agricultural Corps or the Educational Corps will allow you to continue to follow the principles you have sworn to uphold and serve the Republic as you have vowed.
— Grand Master Fae Coven, in-universe author of "The Initiate Trials" in The Jedi Path[2]

The Jedi Path describes the majority of its members as former Initiates who failed to complete the Initiate Trials to become Padawans, but they now have a career in the Jedi Service Corps. Members are assigned by the Reassignment Council to one of the four branches. They also have Padawans, Knights, and Masters who work with the Corps because of a particular passion or special talent.[1]

New Canon or nah?[]

As for the Jedi Service Corps in New Canon? ... Unclear. This paragraph doesn't have reference citations at this time because what would we mark as the continuity? The Jedi Service Corps has popped up in Fantasy Flight Games sourcebooks published after the continuity split. These publications are licensed but infamous for mixing Legends and New Canon subjects and not having a statement regarding their canonicity from the Lucasfilm Story Group. The Agricultural Corps is apparently mentioned in issue #47 of De Agostini's 2015 Build the Millennium Falcon magazine series, which also has a reputation for bringing up Legends subjects not yet mentioned in New Canon (or not in-universe); as non-subscribers, we are unable to verify this until we encounter someone who owns the issue (maybe you, reader?)

Fanon[]

The following fanon is Braigwen's attempt to reconcile the Legends concept of the Service Corps with what we see of the Jedi Order in New Canon.

This article documents fanon.
The content of this page or section has little or no basis in New Canon or Legends. It was originally or primarily created by Braigwen on https://braigwen.neocities.org/sw/jedilore. They either have a blanket permission statement or have given their permission for their work to be used, as stated here.

The Jedi Service Corps are the equivalent to a 'lay order' - these individuals are Force-sensitive, and were Jedi Initiates. They choose to remain under the umbrella of the wider Jedi Order in duties such as agriculture and medicine, while not pursuing the General Order pathway of Padawanhood and eventual Knighting. To be a member of the Service Corps is in no way the mark of an 'inferior' member of the Order, and without the Service Corps, the Jedi Order would not function.[3]

The Jedi Service Corps are an honourable pathway open to all Jedi Initiates, and to Padawans after a period of reflection - and to older Jedi in the General Order who may also wish to spend time in the Service Corps (and many do).[3]

Members of the Service Corps do not construct or use lightsabers.[3]
