Kashyyyk, homeworld of the Wookiee species, is a forested planet[2] in the Mytaranor sector in the Mid Rim,[1] very near Trandosha.[3]
Environment[]
Kashyyyk has dense forests, swamps, and waterways.[4] During the Imperial occupation, some of the environment was deforested and polluted by Imperial industry.[4]
In New Canon, there is a region of Kashyyyk known as the Shadowlands. The Shadowlands, so named because they are permanently in shadow from a thick tree canopy, are extremely dangerous, featuring many of the flora and fauna mentioned below.[4] This is similar to the Legends 'bottomworld,' the fabled ground beneath many layers of trees, from which no Wookiee has ever returned.[5]
Flora[]
Origin Tree[]
The Origin Tree is a huge, ancient tree in the midst of Kashyyyk's forests.[4] It is a rite of passage for young Wookiees to climb it.[6]
Other Plants[]
- The wroshyr is a tree endemic to Kashyyyk. It has sap that can be processed into a versatile, explosive compound.[6]
- The jaw plant is a large plant with a springy pad, the eponymous jaws, that can snap shut and injure prey.[6]
- The saava is a rapidly growing flowering plant that attempts to reach and attack 'any creature in its range'.[6]
Fauna[]
- Flame beetles are swarming, flying insects that glow.[4][6]
- Quillaratts live in the lower levels of the tree canopies. They are half a metre tall, with long, sharp quills over most of their body. They can fire the quills very accurately. They are brownish-green and have soft underbellies.[5]
- The shyyyo is a large bird endemic to Kashyyyk. Thought to be extinct by the time of the Empire, there was nevertheless at least one alive, and with a nest, five years after the Empire's rise.[4] It is believed by Wookiees to be the guardian of the Origin Tree.[6]
- Slyyyg are carnivorous slugs with simple, food-driven cognition. They hang from trees, awaiting prey to drop onto.[6]
- Wyyyschokk are huge (larger than Humans), aggressive spiders.[4]
History[]
Imperial Occupation and Rebellion[]
The Empire came to Kashyyyk in the form of Project Siphon, which deforested areas of Kashyykk to extract explosive sap from wroshyr trees. As well as Wookiee resistance to the Empire's occupation of their homeworld, Saw Gerrera's Partisan cell spent some time fighting the Imperial occupation on Kashyyyk alongside the Wookiee resistance.[4]
