SWPride-2024

The 2024 Pride Variant Covers, featuring: Ruu (trans), Doctor Aphra (lesbian), Cair San Tekka and Xylan Graf (husbands), Sinjir Rath Velus (gay)

If you're searching for LGBTQIA+ characters in Star Wars, you've come to the right wiki! On this page, we've listed all the Legends, New Canon, and non-canonical Star Wars characters who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, asexual, aromantic, and/or non-binary (although currently we haven't had any characters who are intersex, whether humans or by their species' standards). We've identified over 320 LGBTQIA+ Star Wars characters. We also listed more than a dozen who aren't clearly portrayed as such but have some amount of queer coding or something about them is of note when reviewing the franchise's history of portraying gender and sexual diversity.

This page has character names and basics, while the LGBTQIA+ timeline has further details and quotes explaining why they're listed here, along with details about out-of-universe representation by LGBTQIA+ creators who have worked on Star Wars. We also have several articles for specific queer pairings and individual characters. — Immi Thrax Naboo-hand (she/her)

Before you dive across the tables, we have some important notes about the Star Wars Fic Reference Wiki process and why our compilation of Star Wars LGBTQIA+ characters differs from other wikis and websites:

  • We do not try to find non-queer explanations for any of the following:
    • Why characters have they/them personal pronouns (maybe the author felt like using they/them for no reason)
    • Why they have two moms or two dads (could be siblings platonically co-parenting their nibling, not gay!)
    • Why they are appreciative of another's features or physique in a way that's distinctly interested in seeing more (wow what's your workout routine and manscaping regimen, bro?)
    • Why two characters are shown to be in love regardless of becoming romantic partners (deep emotional and physical intimacy and intense proclamations of love = just gals being pals, not pining sapphics or queerplatonic partners!)
    • Why a he/him character has a husband or a she/her character has a wife (mustn't jump to conclusions when there's surely a gender-conforming cishet explanation)
Queer identities may be implied or can be inferred rather than being unambiguously, explicitly stated in stories, by creators, or by franchise reps. Aside from definitively queer characters, we include more-likely-than-not queer possibilities rather than excluding them until or unless someone "official" makes a specific LGBTQIA+ identity obvious and undeniable to the straight and non-trans sides of SW fandom and queer people who didn't do the reading/viewing.
  • When it comes to they/them pronouns for characters, we list that when it's clear in context that they/them are indeed the character's own personal pronouns, rather than being an instance of gender neutral pronouns to convey another character is avoiding assumptions, doesn't know them or anything about them, and so on.
  • Since the pronoun set they/them is often interpreted as being "non-binary pronouns", these are intentionally used by writers (in Star Wars and otherwise) to indicate a fictional character has a non-binary gender identity rather than explicitly stating what gender(s) the character is. However, this fictional approach to correlating pronouns with genders does not apply to real people! In the real world, pronouns are not necessarily indicative of a person's gender and a gender should not be assumed from any set of pronouns. For instance, there are non-binary people who use she/her or he/him and cisgender people who use they/them, along with pronoun sets besides these three. How writers utilize pronouns as writing tools is not equivalent to the complexities of real world personal pronouns, identities, and people. This approach is strictly for fictional characters.
  • "Authorial intent" of whatever sort is not the sole or most important determining factor in whether or not a character is LGBTQIA+ and if that is "canonical" or a "headcanon only" matter:
    • Even if a prose author or a scriptwriter didn't intentionally set out to write a character in a particular way, writers aren't always fully conscious of what tropes are present in their work. They can also be mistaken, such as remembering something from a draft that got edited out of the final version or believing they wrote something explicitly but the readers don't see it. At times, writers choose not to answer honestly (maybe bound by contractual agreements, maybe trolling...) or don't publicly address the subject when they have decided not to "go on record" confirming they did intend it.
    • Star Wars characters also aren't under the complete control of any single authorial voice. The Story Group, print media editors, and many others working in the Disney era are consistently interested in and vocal about representation and could make or suggest changes to straighten a character out if they're supposed to be definitively, undeniably, canonically cishet.
    • The argument that "if X was queer, Disney/Lucasfilm would--" doesn't hold up. The Walt Disney Company has plenty of executives uninterested in (or hostile to) LGBTQIA+ characters outside of marketing for Pride month or other commercial motivations. When it comes to the corporation, most queer characters get the cricket treatment (and not of the "let your conscience be your guide" sort).
    • Prioritizing authorial intent regarding television and film characters (ex. only listening to the director or showrunner's take) may turn into dismissing what's present in the actual performances and dismissing performers' perspectives on everything they put into their roles ("And don't underestimate the importance of body language!").
    • People can also misunderstand what has been said about a character and interpret it as definitively confirming/denying queerness when that wasn't actually the intent behind the response.
The absence of stated authorial intent does not mean that a character is not depicted as LGBTQIA+ and cannot be interpreted as such. "Authorial intent" may provide an answer, but it isn't the only answer.

Now that all that's said... ONWARD, TO THE STAR WARS RAINBOW!

Key[]

For brevity, the table columns use abbreviations:

Gender/Attracted to:

  • F is for characters who are stated to be a female, woman, or girl; whose pronouns are she/her only; who are described with feminine-gendered terms; or any combination of these.[note 1]
  • M is for characters who are stated to be a male, man, or boy; whose pronouns are he/him only; who are described with masculine-gendered terms; or any combination of these.[note 1]
  • NB is for non-binary as a specific gender identity and the umbrella of non-binary genders (NB+), which includes many more genders that are not binary (ex. genderfluid or unnamed genders for aliens). Most NB+ characters have they/them personal pronouns, but we note when a character uses multiple pronouns or neopronouns instead. Some characters are additionally described with only gender-neutral language instead of gendered versions (ex. "sibling" instead of "brother", "being" instead of "woman"). See the reference notes at the end of this sentence for more on why and how we conclude characters are enbies.[nb 1][nb 2][nb 3][nb 4][nb 5]
    • G- is for genderless characters who are either explicitly called that label or are stated to have no gender.
    • GF is for genderfluid characters, either described in a way consistent with fluid gender identity or explicitly labeled as authorial intent.
  • (T) is for trans, in parentheses because transgender is a description and not itself a gender (ex. a transgender woman and a cisgender woman are both women in their gender). It's included next to the character's gender.

Firsts:

  • 1a is the year in which they first appeared
  • 1p is the year in which they first got portrayed as LGBTQIA+
  • 1a1p is when the year of their first appearance is also the year of their first LGBTQIA+ portrayal

???

? in the attracted or partner(s) / interest(s) columns or a "p?" portrayal year indicates it's questionable that the character is deliberately meant to be LGBTQIA+ rep (ex. they may be queer-coded), but they're still relevant to how SW has historically approached gender and sexuality.

"only"

F only or M only means the F or M character is explicitly established as attracted to their own gender. Their non-attraction to the other binary gender is either explicitly stated in text or it's implied by never showing attractions to that gender.[note 2]

Notes[]

Notes on characters listed as non-binary:

  1. 1.00 1.01 1.02 1.03 1.04 1.05 1.06 1.07 1.08 1.09 1.10 1.11 1.12 1.13 1.14 1.15 1.16 1.17 1.18 1.19 1.20 1.21 1.22 1.23 NB Type 1: Character has they/them personal pronouns. Pronouns are one of the ways writers convey character information and these personal pronouns are used when indicating a character's gender is non-binary or a gender within the broad spectrum/umbrella of non-binary genders. Star Wars isn't at a point where any explicitly non-non-binary characters (binary men or women) have they/them as personal pronouns, let alone multiple sets or neopronouns, so this character is under the umbrella. If this character is ever "officially" labeled in the future, their gender may not be the exact label non-binary since there are multiple possible non-binary labels.
  2. 2.00 2.01 2.02 2.03 2.04 2.05 2.06 2.07 2.08 2.09 2.10 2.11 2.12 2.13 NB Type 2: Character has they/them personal pronouns, neopronouns, and/or multiple pronoun sets, and their author has stated that the character is non-binary or under the non-binary umbrella, with or without specifically naming a gender label.
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 3.6 3.7 NB Type 3: Character's personal pronouns are they/them and some sort of official Star Wars thing states their gender identity is non-binary/nonbinary (hyphenation use varies).
  4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.4 4.5 NB Type 4: Character's personal pronouns are they/them and they are portrayed by an actor who is not a cisgender binary man/woman. The simplest and most likely explanation is that the character is under the non-binary umbrella. While Disney sometimes hires trans and/or non-binary actors to portray characters of a binary gender, this wiki will not do erasure/denial gymnastics to claim the actor is portraying a character who has they/them pronouns yet isn't under the non-binary umbrella.
  5. 5.00 5.01 5.02 5.03 5.04 5.05 5.06 5.07 5.08 5.09 5.10 5.11 5.12 5.13 5.14 5.15 NB Type 5 (or 2b): Character's personal pronouns are they/them and the author has responded to a user of another wiki (through public response or permission to publicly share correspondence) that singular they/them pronouns are intended to indicate a character's non-binary gender(s). (In some cases, people have questioned authors who are non-binary and use they/them pronouns themselves to affirm this was done intentionally.)
  6. Voice actor Andi René Christensen, who is credited for "Additional Voices"[52] and voiced Ashe Javi,[soc 11] is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns.[web 4]
  7. Ess Hödlmoser, who performs Dennion in Star Wars Outlaws (credited as "Ess Hoedlmoser" and "Motion Capture Performer"),[59] is trans non-binary and uses they/them and he/him pronouns.[web 6]
  8. Voice actor Valeria Rodríguez[99] is nonbinary[soc 17][soc 18][soc 19] and uses any pronouns.[soc 17]
  9. Voice actor JayR Tinaco, who voices EE'zok in Star Wars Outlaws (credited as "Voice Talent"),[59] is non-binary and uses he/him and they/them pronouns.[web 7]
  10. 10.0 10.1 When Princess Leia Organa first meets Occo Quentto in Leia, Princess of Alderaan (LPOA), C-3PO tells her these details about their species: "Chalhuddans have five different genders and shift through them throughout their lives. Their native pronoun cases are rather complex—indicating not only current gender but two or three previous ones, and occasionally the gender they feel most likely to be next, but as our language has no equivalent words, 'you' or 'they' can be used in all cases."[155] This description would be consistent with the label genderfluid, but the Chalhuddan characters have not been explicitly labeled as such.

In this publicly-shared e-mail between another wiki and Mike Chen regarding a Chalhuddan youngling in Brotherhood, Chen said: "I asked the story group if there were any non-binary species so I could rep them. It was their suggestion. :)" He responded to an inquiry that made two assumptions:
    1. that a "species' principle" established in LPOA would "make the character canonically genderfluid" if Chen carried it over,
    2. and that it was relevant to note the youngling "would be quite young" when discussing their gender.
  11. In The High Republic: Cataclysm, the astromech droid 4VO-TG (aka "Teegee") is referred to with he/him and it/its pronouns;[37] the latter is something Star Wars does with droids rather than indicative of a particular droid's identity. His gender is stated in this publicly-shared e-mail between another wiki and Lydia Kang regarding authorial intent: "The droid 4VO-TG (who is one of my absolute favorite characters in the book) is named after one of my children, who is nonbinary. I asked my child (who uses they/them pronouns) what they would like Teegee's pronouns to be and they said 'he/him' felt right."
  12. Voice actor Ry Chase[177] is nonbinary,[soc 42] uses any pronouns,[soc 43] and has discussed playing this nonbinary Jedi character. Chase also voiced Metz,[web 17] a character who has not had any pronouns used in-universe.[178]

General notes:

  1. 1.0 1.1 For characters with "F" or "M", we haven't provided more specific citations on whether it's based on a character's stated gender, stated pronouns, or both, to keep things condensed and easily sortable. The references list would be so long if we did it for all 300+ characters, but we'll provide more specific sources upon request.
  2. Statements of sexuality for those who aren't non-binary are typically based upon the gender binary—that is, a woman who is only or also attracted to women, a man who is only or also attracted to men, a woman or a man who is attracted to men and women or to "both". These phrasings don't address: what about to non-binary people? We do not intend this as exclusion or erasure of non-binary genders, but to reflect the ways gender and attraction are addressed in SW. It does not mean any SW character is explicitly not attracted to NB+ people.
  3. 3.00 3.01 3.02 3.03 3.04 3.05 3.06 3.07 3.08 3.09 3.10 3.11 3.12 3.13 Player character in Star Wars: The Old Republic and this non-player character can have a mutual flirtation, meaning there's at least one dialogue where the PC's interest is reciprocated after choosing an optional [Flirt], but this doesn't become an ongoing romance storyline. Since there are no gender restrictions on which PCs can do this, this NPC is considered bi/pan/queer.
  4. 4.00 4.01 4.02 4.03 4.04 4.05 4.06 4.07 4.08 4.09 4.10 Player character in Star Wars: The Old Republic can have a romance storyline with this non-player character. Since there are no gender restrictions on which PCs can do this, this NPC is considered bi/pan/queer.
  5. 5.0 5.1 5.2 While Revan has a canonical identity that's fixed (M attracted to F), Revan's identity in the gameplay of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic depends upon the player's choices. Players can choose to play M or F and whether or not to pursue the romantic storylines available to their PC's chosen gender. Thus, any given player may experience Revan as F or M and choose if Revan is with or without attractions. Players of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords also get to determine Revan's gender during their gameplay, with a side effect of the game automatically setting one of the NPCs as Revan's prior romantic interest rather than being the player's choice.
  6. 6.00 6.01 6.02 6.03 6.04 6.05 6.06 6.07 6.08 6.09 6.10 6.11 6.12 6.13 6.14 6.15 6.16 6.17 6.18 Only portrayed as LGBTQIA+ in New Canon, not in Legends.
  7. 7.0 7.1 Aphra is labeled a lesbian as an OOU term[SWweb 3][SWweb 4] and it's repeatedly established IU that she is attracted to women and is not attracted to men. Some IU statements:
    • Aphra's parting words to Tolvan are "Killing you is the only smart move... but you're cute." Her father observes this and comments afterward, "You have very bad taste in women." ("Well, Dad, I hear that runs in the family.")[73]
    • Sana Starros, at the time Aphra's ex-girlfriend, says of her that "guys and Aphra don't exactly mix".[74]
    • Aphra describes a nightclub to Just Lucky: "The prettiest girls--or boys if you're into that--the prettiest people, really, come here to party on their daddies' credits." In the same issue, she separately has sex with Domina Tagge and then with Teviy; Aphra refers to the latter as "the girl from last night"[75] and the former is a woman.
Whether or not Aphra's the type of lesbian whose F/F attraction includes some non-binary people is a subject that hasn't been addressed.
  8. Kalandra's pronouns are she/her and she is one of Aphra's ex-lovers;[80] however, she does not have a stated gender identity.
  9. 9.0 9.1 Yrica Quell's first girlfriend may or may not be Nette; author Alexander Freed chose not to say for sure "[w]hether Nette was Quell's FIRST girlfriend". So, "Yrica Quell's girlfriend" may not be a separate character who exists.
  10. 10.0 10.1 When Poe's past/future attractions are discussed in canonical sources, they use non-gendered language. From his page spread in the TLJ Visual Dictionary: "Poe wears the wedding ring of his late mother, Shara Bey, on a necklace, waiting to share it with the right partner."[161] In chapter 23 of Poe Dameron: Free Fall: "It had been a spur-of-the-moment decision, to lean in and kiss her. It had felt right then and still felt right. But Poe wasn't exactly experienced in the ways of the heart, and he'd probably managed to screw things up somehow. He'd messed up relationships with people before."[118] Actor Oscar Isaac has also spoken repeatedly about playing the role as attracted to Finn, wanting the films to follow through with a romance (not something he can control), and how he views Poe's sexuality as fluid.
  11. 11.0 11.1 Preeti doesn't have a stated gender or pronouns as of issue #4, but "Preeti" is a female given name from India and the character is fem-presenting.
  12. Vukorah has not been explicitly labeled as a trans woman. However, multiple flashback scenes in Bounty Hunters depict changes in her appearance[172] and interactions with other characters[173] that suggest she has transitioned from her assigned gender at birth. Writer Ethan Sacks has publicly acknowledged people reading between the lines.
  13. Yoshi's gender and pronouns are not canonically provided.[80] Aphra is repeatedly established as attracted to women and not to men, and OOU she's labeled a lesbian.[note 7] Most audiobook listeners/scriptbook readers know this about Aphra, and thus they may assume this means ex-lover Yoshi is a woman since that's likely from what we know. However, nothing canonical has addressed Aphra's attractions in relation to non-binary people, just women (yes) or men (no), and Yoshi-definitely-is-not-a-man does not equate to Yoshi-definitely-is-a-woman.

Yeah, it could have been. I mean, she's no Aphra. She's a good one.

Luke had a thing for Aphra? Firstly, guys and Aphra don't exactly mix. Secondly, you count yourself lucky she and guys don't mix! You survived one Death Star. Don't go wishing for another.

[Elzar's and Avar's] fingers were still entwined. Elzar felt almost giddy about it suddenly, like when they were kids. That thought led immediately to memories of the two of them giggling with Stellan, flirting with each other, and at him, his ears pink when he wouldn't flirt back.
The memories, just flashes and little fond nicknames echoing in his mind, faded as he pushed them away, watching Avar as her face went through a similar journey. She was thinking the exact same things. Her lips parted in a soft sigh that was almost, almost Stellan's name.
Loving Stellan had certainly never done anything but make the two of them better.

You could say that. We were all Padawans at the same time. Avar, Stellan, and Elzar--they were a tight crew. Maybe more than that. Who knows? Now we're all grown up, with the galaxy hanging in the balance, and things are... more complicated, it seems. I stay out of it, best I can.

    Si Spurrier
There's quite a big sort of question mark about Aphra's specific sexuality...do we have to tread carefully around specific sexual terminology?
    Kieron Gillen
I normally say Aphra's a lesbian. I've never written her with any romantic interest in men. There's definitely some people who think Vader and Aphra were flirting but I'm not going to get into that.
    Si Spurrier
    Literally flirting with disaster.
    Kieron Gillen
I've written her primarily romantically interested in women. I think that would be fair to say. Star Wars doesn't really have the terminology that we do either. One of the things we wrote inside the first arc was that homophobia as we know it doesn't really exist in the Star Wars universe. No one raises their eyebrow, no one seems surprised when it happens. It's kind of just something that's there, so the way that they process sexuality has got to be different anyway, and how they choose to identify, as well.

Kieron, I know you just said you don't really plan for the future, but when you first started writing Aphra, was the intent always that she was going to be a lesbian or is that something you sort of learned about her along the way as you kept writing?
    Kieron Gillen
That's what we learned. All I really knew about [Aphra's] sexuality was, "She doesn't want to sleep with Vader." That isn't what her relationship's like.
    [Skip!]
    Kieron Gillen
It was Jason [Aaron] who said, "I want to hint on a past relationship with Sana," and I said, "Great, go for it!" And then, and from that moment, I know she's a lesbian. That was immediate for me.

Why did I lean a lesbian rather than bisexual? That's partially because I just think I've made more bisexual [characters]. Maybe it was that simple. [Alyssa laughs.] There's a bit in my brain as a creator, like, what have I done more of? [Laughs.] Speaking as somebody [who's], you know, bisexual himself, obviously I'm very pro bisexual visibility. I’d be very self-defeating if I wasn't, but it just seemed right, I guess. I quite like the fact that immediately means, "Oh, she's not going to go into a romance with Luke or Han or any of those." Her relationship is, by definition, defined to be different and that felt quite useful to take off the table. That was kind of subconscious and she just always seemed more of a lesbian. I don't want to almost over-intellectualize it. She just seemed like a lesbian to me. That was just it.
    StarWars.com
I think the phrase we used the last time we talked was she's a total disaster lesbian.
    Kieron Gillen
    Oh, yeah, yeah, absolutely. [Laughs.]
    [Skip!]
    Kieron Gillen
Alyssa's describing something slightly different, but the basic mathematics of writing a story are like, okay, I need a love interest. If our lead is a lesbian, it has to be a woman and that means she has to be queer as well, you know? And suddenly you've got two queer characters. And just the way everything -- one decision of this is the lead character, everything goes out from that.

Abel G. Peña (excerpt of reply)
And so, now I thought: why shouldn't he be lady's man and a man's man, so to speak? So I talked about how he had a passion for spice and women, but also harbored an attraction for not only members of other species but the Emperor's successor and faux son Trioculus ... who eventually had Takel executed.

Though a cousin sci-fi franchise like Star Trek had dealt with these kinds of issues for some time, the notion was so new in Star Wars that I think the description of Takel's attraction to Trioculus actually went over most people's heads. I don't think my co-writer even realized it until some friends brought it up to us in an email.

Hi Claudia! Having a bit of a debate on Wookieepedia over some disagreeing with placing Amilyn Holdo in the LGBTQ+ category, saying it's "not confirmed" or only an "interpretation" of her convo with Leia about "humanoid males." Would you be all right with speaking to your intention re: Amilyn's sexuality? Thank you and be well!
    Claudia Gray
FWIW, I meant to portray Holdo as LGBTQ+. (I'm not putting a category on it, because there are brand new genders and thousands of species in the GFFA, so our terminology probably doesn't fit very well.) That said, my intent doesn't necessarily govern anything that might or might not appear in future SW media, so I can't give a definitive answer for anything beyond my own intent in LPOA.
    Immi Thrax
Thank you so much for the quick reply! Your intention came across to many people and we adore her. Hopefully we get to see more of her in the future, by you or carrying forward your portrayal! I wish we knew what GFFA's language would be--your multi-gendered Chalhuddans come to mind--but for now, we've got our broader community term. Thank you again :)

The Latin experience gave [Humberly] González a footing in the Star Wars universe, and her life as an out and proud queer woman shaded it. While the game may not be a love story, González thinks her own performance and the work by writer Nikki Foy imbue Kay with an implicit queer identity. As she puts it, "If you are feeling it, it's accurate.

"I think everyone is definitely picking up on the fact that she meets Selo [the speeder mechanic] and she's all structured and nervous and that energy affects her," González says. "Even with Vail [the bounty hunter] — there's an energy there too. It doesn't need to be obvious, but if you're picking up on it, isn't that just human behavior? It's relationships, it's energy."

*raises a glass* To the amazing @DelilahSDawson and Vi Moradi. Black Spire is such a beautiful book full of pain and joy. I love Vi's Batuu found family so much. And I love my real Star Wars family too.

Black Spire is so personally special to me for establishing Vi as a canonically asexual character. You can get frighteningly used to never seeing a part of yourself depicted in media.

When Delilah asked me 'What if Vi was ace?' it felt selfish to say 'Yes. Please. That would be mean the world.' But I'm so, so glad she asked (#cidertruths ❤️).

Asexual awareness is still so low that I usually have to explain what 'asexual' means when I use it. It can feel clinical, like trying to explain that I'm not a slug. But books like Black Spire are starting to make that easier: I'm not like a slug. I'm like Vi freaking Moradi.

Luckily for us, popular media is finally coming around, giving us opportunities for accurate representation and the freedom to express ourselves on a greater scale than ever before." (Archived on 2024-02-04)

I think it's safe to say they're an item, absolutely. They're absolutely a gay couple and we're proud of that. We love Flix and Orka.

I have had a sentence prepared for a year and a half. If someone would finally ask me, I would say, 'All I can say is that when Flix says, 'I love you,' Orka says, 'I know'. They're the cutest.

[The relationships between the characters has been defined since the earliest days of the series, [Bobby] Moynihan explained. When he was given the scripts to Resistance under a different name to prevent leaks, the relationship between the pair was made as overt as possible.]

I don't know if it's well known, but when I got the script originally it wasn't called Star Wars. And they weren't Orka and Flix, they were Oscar and Felix [from The Odd Couple]. That was their whole thing... What I always say about Orka and Flix, what I always force in there, when Flix says 'I love you,' Orka says 'I know.' They love each other. I think you'll get a little more Orka and Flix, you'll see them more outside of work [this season]. They're my favorite little couple. I want to do a family spin-off with them and their robots.
