LGBTQIA+ characters LGBTQIA+ creators LGBTQIA+ timeline

LGBTQIA+ creators have always worked on Star Wars, going back to the original 1977 film now titled Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. LGBTQIA+ people have contributed to Star Wars films, television, print media, and video games in many different roles—such as actors, voice actors, prose writers, screenwriters, composers, sequential artists, and more.

The Star Wars logo with Pride stripes is new; LGBTQIA+ people working on Star Wars is not

These Star Wars creators are out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary, and/or other labels under the umbrella. The table also includes a few people who were not out during their lifetimes but are now publicly known to have been something other than straight (according to loved ones or authorized biographers, not speculation or gossip) and some who've had a partner of the same gender without labeling themselves with any particular term.

If you (or someone you represent) does not wish to be listed here, please edit the page, or contact us ASAP! You can also file a support ticket with Fandom. You are more important than this page!

Disclaimer about labels: Outside parties do not get to declare what someone else's identity is. People get to label themselves. Someone may use certain labels for themselves yet others presume and call them by another one. As an example: Fiona Shaw is a woman who has discussed being gay yet is frequently described by others as a lesbian, presuming that a gay woman uses that as her label; we list her as gay. Sometimes a person uses a specific identity term at one time in their life and later another fits them as well or better than what they said before. Whether or not someone chooses to discard a prior label or keep it while adding another is a personal decision. At times, people explicitly say their language usage has changed. For instance, Amandla Stenberg formerly identified as bisexual and pansexual in 2016, then came out again in 2018, saying, "I'm gay — not bi, not pan, but gay." (Some media outlets have yet to notice that.) Editors of this wiki article strive to document the language people use for themselves, correct any mistakes we make, and prioritize real people over fictional space wizards.

See LGBTQIA+ timeline for a combined history of LGBTQIA+ people working on Star Wars and representation in the form of LGBTQIA+ characters.

*raises a glass* To the amazing @DelilahSDawson and Vi Moradi. Black Spire is such a beautiful book full of pain and joy. I love Vi's Batuu found family so much. And I love my real Star Wars family too.

Black Spire is so personally special to me for establishing Vi as a canonically asexual character. You can get frighteningly used to never seeing a part of yourself depicted in media.

When Delilah asked me 'What if Vi was ace?' it felt selfish to say 'Yes. Please. That would be mean the world.' But I'm so, so glad she asked (#cidertruths ❤️).

Asexual awareness is still so low that I usually have to explain what 'asexual' means when I use it. It can feel clinical, like trying to explain that I'm not a slug. But books like Black Spire are starting to make that easier: I'm not like a slug. I'm like Vi freaking Moradi.

I just came out as nonbinary last month for Pride, and while there were many factors that lead me here (turns out in quarantine there's time to really sort through stuff huh?), I know I wouldn't be celebrating this day without the support of LGBTQ creators and showrunners.
"When I first came into the industry I had a few...discouraging...interactions that made me feel like this wasn’t a safe place to be me. So I compartmentalized pretty hard. I already felt so much of my energy was taken up navigating space as a queer POC (I was already out as bi).
"I would try to push the envelope but only strategically. A lot of people were encouraging but it sucked that things that didn’t seem 'political' at all to me (see: people literally existing) required so much delicacy.
"It wasn't until I worked in environments with active, top-down inclusion that my brain took off some of its safe guards to even continue my queer journey where I had definitely stunted it as a 'survival' technique. Turns out, this thing called LIVING is way better than surviving.
