This wiki is intended to have pages in whatever format is the most useful for referencing, so use whatever article structure(s) make the most sense for your topic. Use whatever tense you feel is right, and feel free to mix in-universe and out-of-universe information. Consistency between US and Commonwealth spelling is also not important. Nevertheless, there are still some rules about formatting.
Continuities[]
"New Canon" and "Legends" are the two Star Wars continuities that each have their own canonical expanded universes. "Legends" generally refers to canon material released before 2014, and "New Canon" (sometimes referred to as "Disney Canon") is from after Disney acquired the franchise (in 2012) and subsequently rebooted the Star Wars canon (in 2014). We use this term instead of just capital-C "Canon" to avoid confusion with how something can be lowercase-c canon when it's within the Legends continuity but not canon in Canon.
While "pre-2014" and "post-2014" are general guidelines for what's New Canon and what's Legends, it can be a bit more complicated sometimes. For instance:
- Some sources are canonical for both continuities, such as the first six films and the pre-reboot seasons of the television show Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
- Season 7 (2020) of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is New Canon only, though.
- Some Legends sources were published in 2015 despite the reboot. Additionally, all Star Wars: The Old Republic material is Legends, even though it's still being updated with new content ten years after the reboot.
We document both continuities and we happily mix the two to give a more coherent or complete picture of whatever subject you're interested in. And we also document fanon! However, we want to be sure people who use our wiki can tell where everything comes from, whether that's just to be informative or because someone may want to stick to one continuity's canon by excluding content from the other. (See the What to put in your references section below for how to mark a continuity). For subjects where the New Canon and Legends contradict each other, feel free to note that or document both separately, whatever you think is more useful. See Queen Amidala's throne room gown for an example of an article that both combines and divides the two continuities along with including real world information.
For reference purposes:
- "New Canon" and "Legends" are the two Star Wars canonical continuities. If you're not sure, make your best guess or consult other resources like other Fandom-hosted wikis with Canon/Legends continuity markers, usually found as a banner image near the top or within an infobox/sidebar.
- "Licensed Non-Canon" are sources that were licensed by Lucasfilm but aren't considered canonical to either primary continuity (e.g. LEGO video games, Infinities comics, and the Visions TV show are all licensed but are not part of either canon).
- "Real World" is for Lucasfilm's content (or content they've endorsed through their involvement) specific to the real world of making Star Wars. This is stuff about Star Wars, its actors, or other relevant topics, such as a StarWars.com article on an upcoming show, a Rolling Stone profile of an actor about their original trilogy role, or a Lucasfilm documentary. When citing something that's not about Star Wars, we usually omit
|continuity=
to keep it separated. - "Fanworks" are fanfics, fanvids, fanart or other fanworks. Cite them using the {{Cite fanwork}} template. (For content from a fansite that isn't a fanwork, you can use {{Cite web}} with the parameter
continuity=fansite
.)
Spoilers[]
This wiki requires that you mark spoilers. Spoilers include anything released in the last two months, as well as endings, plot twists, deaths, etc. no matter how old those spoilers are. Ask yourself "If I hadn't already read/watched this, would I be bummed to get it spoiled on a wiki page?" and if the answer is yes, spoiler it! It's better to err on the side of caution.
To spoiler a small bit of text, use {{Spoiler}}. For multiple paragraphs, use {{Collapse}}. If the whole page is a spoiler, put {{Spoiler banner}} at the top of the page. How-to information is on those pages.
Reference citations[]
Please always cite your content! Where possible, check them yourself or get someone else on this wiki to check for you, instead of assuming citations on other wikis are right, since if they're not, all we're doing is reproducing mistakes. You can cite things by using the ref tag, which defines a reference in between <ref name="">
(or <ref>
) and </ref>
. You don't have to include a ref name to use it one time, but it's helpful to name it so the same reference be cited multiple times. When you use the citation again, you'll do it as <ref name="THE NAME" />
— notice how it ends in />
to close the ref tag.
At the bottom of the page, the following needs to be added to ensure the list of references appears:
==References== {{Reflist}}
Example: Include a ref name for this sentence: Jedi can hold their breath longer than a non-Force Sensitive member of their species.<ref name="ITD 12">{{Cite_print |continuity=can |title=Into the Dark |titlepart=Chapter 12 |author=Claudia Gray}}</ref>
. You can then reference it again later like this: Some Jedi think that the Jedi Order's orthodoxy about dealing with emotions is too strict, such as Cohmac Vitus.<ref name="ITD 12" />
Please use Source Editor when you need to create a new ref! Visual Editor does weird things with colons and numbers to automatically name them (like <ref name=":1">
).
You can't use a plain ol' number as a ref name. For example, <ref name="19">
doesn't work, but <ref name="19 BBY">
or <ref name="BBY 19">
does.
Reference placement[]
- References go immediately after punctuation and outside of quotation marks, with no space between the end of the word or punctuation mark and a reference tag.
Example:It is not necessary for the target of a Jedi's mind touch to be able to hear the words the Jedi spoke.<ref name"LotJ 37">{{Cite_print |continuity=can |title=Light of the Jedi |titlepart=Chapter 37 |author=Charles Soule}}</ref>
Result: It was not necessary for the target of a Jedi's mind touch to be able to hear the words the Jedi spoke.[1] - To avoid difficulties associated with readability, only add references in logical places:
- If an entire paragraph is from the same source, add the reference at the end of the paragraph.
- If a paragraph was written based on multiple sources, place the reference at the end of specific sentences, phrases, or words as necessary. Example: Many Jedi struggle with how to reconcile their experiences of emotion with the policy on attachment, such as Cohmac Vitus[2] and Bell Zettifar.[3]
- When the same source is used for multiple sentences or phrases in a row, place the reference only at the end of the last one, not after each one.
Thank you to the LGBTQIA+ Wiki, from whom I stole this section.
What to put in your references[]
The sources we're using are going to be in one of five types: New Canon, Legends, Licensed Non-Canon, Real World, or Fanwork, as explained above in the Continuities section. Noting the continuity of each source is built into non-fanwork citation templates except for the {{Film}} template, which doesn't need it. (If you find one where that's not the case, please contact the admins!)
All citations should have a citation template between its <ref></ref> tags. If you want to cite a source that doesn't fit in any of our existing templates, please contact an admin and we'll be happy to add one.
Really fancy citations[]
It is possible to have different groups of citations! It is not at all compulsory, but if you're feeling fancy, you can have references that look like [Note 1] instead of just [1], or whatever you want instead of "Note". It is a little more complicated than regular citations, though, and they don't show up in the {{Reflist}}
, so you need to add another thing near the bottom of your article.
- For initially defining the ref, choose one of these options. They do the same thing, but the first one lets you put refs of the
<ref name=""></ref>
kind inside it (see "For even fancier example" for what this looks like).{{#tag:ref |Text of the ref |group=title the group of refs |name=title the individual ref}}
— [notice the lack of quotation marks! spacing before|=
optional for readability.]<ref group="title the group of refs" name="title the individual ref">Text of the ref</ref>
- For subsequent uses of that ref,
<ref group="title of group" name="title of individual" />
[This is still the case even if you choose the first option with the{{#tag:ref |
at the beginning] - Since they aren't contained in
{{Reflist}}
, you have to give them somewhere to go using another tag and the group name:<references group="title of group" />
. We recommend having a separate section for those. You can have multiple groups. See Swears#Notes for an example of how that works.
- For example
Rancors are reptomammals.<ref name="FG Tatooine">{{Cite_print |continuity=leg |title=The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide |titlepart="Tatooine" |author=Terryl Whitlatch and Bob Carau }}</ref><ref group="Note" name="NEGTAS contradiction">''The New Essential Guide to Alien Species'' says they're reptiles.</ref>
- For an even fancier example
Rancors are reptomammals.<ref name="FG Tatooine">{{Cite_print |continuity=leg |title=The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide |titlepart="Tatooine" |author=Terryl Whitlatch and Bob Carau }}</ref>{{#tag:ref |''The New Essential Guide to Alien Species'' says they're reptiles.<ref group="NEGTAS" name="Rancor">{{Cite_print |continuity=leg |title=The New Essential Guide to Alien Species |titlepart="Rancor" |author=Margaret Lewis and Helen Keier}}</ref> |group=Note |name=NEGTAS contradiction2}}
Fanon content[]
If you're writing a page about fanon, please put the {{Fanon}} template at the top of the page, including the name of the author and a permission statement if the fanon is primarily the creation of one person (see the template's page for an explanation on how to use its parameters). If you're writing about fanon on a page that also contains sections about New Canon or Legends, put the template at the start of the fanon section and {{Fanon end}} at the end of the section.
